Museums and Publicly-Accessible Sites

Basilica of St. Servatius This 12th Century church is the destination of an annual pilgrimage and parade of the relics of the 4th Century saint. It also houses a Lapidarium which includes the excavated Roman stonework which previously inhabited the site when it was part of the sanctuary of Jupiter. Abutting the site of the old Roman road, it also contains late Roman and early Roman-Christian gravestones.

Bonnefanten Museum Maastricht’s world-renowned art museum, which has a permanent collection of Roman art and artifacts from South Limburg.

Gallo-Roman Museum Located in Tongeren, Belgium. Great collection of ancient Roman and Germanic tribe artifacts found in the region. Tongeren’s forest was also the site of the Batavian Revolt of 69-70 CE against the Roman army.

Hotel Derlon In the Vrijthof square, contains the excavated remains of a temple to Jupiter in its cellar bar. Open to the public.

Domaine Backerbosch Wines A Roman villa dating to 300 CE was excavated on this site, the foundations of which are now underneath the vineyard. Located 7 km from Maastricht.

Museum het Valkhof Nijmegen and Maastricht challenge each other for the title of oldest Roman city in the Netherlands. This museum features a great deal of artifacts uncovered in both cities.

Thermenmuseum In Herleen is preserved Roman bathhouse and museum featuring exhibitions of regionally-excavated Roman artifacts.

Via Belgica Website featuring hiking and cycling routes along the Roman Via Belgica road. It also covers all Roman sites along its route, including cultural activities and museums.


Roman Recreations- Living History Sites

Archeon Museum Park situated two hours’ drive North of Maastricht, is a living history museum ranging from the Prehistoric to Medieval times. Extensive Roman recreations include a domus, temple complex, villa, baths and a forum, among other structures. Kid-friendly.

Roman Catacombs Museum In the nearby medieval city of Valkenburg, visit a beautiful recreation of a 4th Century Roman catacomb.

Villa de Proosdij A 19th Century villa built on the grounds of a former Roman villa along the via Belgica. It also features a recreations Roman garden, as well as the ancient Roman food in their café.
